Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the right to challenge particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
