The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together resides a intense contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.
