Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
