European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
